The rundown
The 1989 birthplace of an empire. Lowell Hawthorne and his family pooled their resources to open this first bakery and restaurant on East Gun Hill Road, and from it grew more than 125 franchises across North America. The original still serves the iconic flaky beef patties, jerk chicken marinated in scotch bonnet and pimento, and slow cooked braised oxtail.
